The National Youth Commission (NYC) cried foul on the joke of veteran journalist about Jake Zyrus.
In July 10 episode of “TV Patrol,” Ted Failon mentioned Zyrus comparing his voice when he was still Charice. De Castro found it as an opportunity to jokes. He said: “Ang tawag diyan ay climate change. Madaming talagang nagbabago ngayon.”
NYC Commissioner Perci Cendaña said joking about transgender people contributes to the prejudice and stigma on them.
“When a popular broadcaster and former vice president mocks a transgender man, he is not only offending LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people, he is also setting a bad example to his audience, especially to the youth,” said Cendaña.
Cendaña added that such topics are serious and should be treated with sensibility. He then encouraged De Castro to apologize.
“By rectifying the offensive and discriminatory remarks, the former vice president will set a good example to his audience, especially the youth. We urge him to be an ally for acceptance and equality.”
Charice Pempengco came out in June as a transgender man and used Jake Zyrus as his screen name. He said he had removed his breast and have been undergoing testosterone treatment. He noted that he is considering sex reassignment surgery.
