The Philippines travel and tourism industry are now at stake.
Many travelers are now canceling their trips to the Philippines, especially in Visayan region. This is probably due to the recent clash between Abu Sayyaf and government troops in Bohol.
Rajah Tours Philippines Chair Alejandra Clemente noted that the cancellations include the 500 travelers in Japan, who made reservations at a five-star hotel and could have spent P30 million during their stay.
Many countries have already released some travel advisories to the Philippines for their locals. Clemente said these are now taking tolls on the country and its tourism department. She already wrote to Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary Wanda Teo to address the issue.
“If this deteriorating situation is not addressed immediately, it may adversely affect the flow of tourism arrivals in the country,” Clemente told Teo in the letter sent on Monday.
As of the press time, Teo has yet to comment.
Assistant Secretary Ricky Alegre said the agency is taking the letter from Clemente seriously. In fact, it already asked the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as well as the Philippine National Police (PNP) to address this situation.
USA, Australia, Canada and Korea already issued travel advisories to its citizen to be cautious in traveling to the Philippines, especially in Visayas area.
