1 Dead in Quezon Tsunami Hoax, Suspect Being Hunted

People from Candelaria Quezon and San Juan, Batangas panicked and tried to left the place as early as possible.

Why? Because residents of the places received text messages warning everyone of a looming “tsunami” from the Tayabas Bay. The warning also came as residents observed a decrease in the water level.

Despite the fact that Candelaria Bgy. Chairman George Suayan already clarified this issue with the upper government, none of the residents wanted to listen.

Dr. Henry Busar of the Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) later told the residents that the tsunami warning is a hoax noting that the rise of the sea level is only cause by the rainfall brought by the Typhoon Henry.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Renato Solidum explained that a tsunami will only happen after a strong earthquake.

Unfortunately, one resident of Candelaria died. Julieta Pañoso, 64, died while trying to flee from supposed tsunami. According to her relatives, the senior citizen fell from an overloaded tricycle hitting her head.

Now, the authorities launched an investigation regarding the issue. Quezon Province Governor Jayjay Suarez said he ordered an investigation to track down the person or people who started this commotion.

“Pinaiimbistigahan ko na kung saan nagmula, sino nag-umpisa, o saan naggaling yung ganung thismis. Dahil, it caused unnecessary stress.”

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is also looking into the angles of theft. Senior Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel said scare tactics can also serve as modus of thieves to make sure people are not in their corresponding houses.

“Pwede ding maging modus ng mga kawatan yan. Kapag wala pong tao sa bahay, yun po ang opportunity para makapasok yung mga kawatan.”
