A 23-year-old soldier died during his training for his candidate soldier course in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.
Randell Berin was running around with his colleague around the camp on the morning of January 10 when collapsed.
“Suddenly nung natumba, nag-collapse. Umaga ‘yon, they’re having their run, team run… sabay-sabay naman silang tumakbo galing doon sa training school sa taas papunta dito sa ruta nila. Then suddenly, according sa mga kasama niya sa team, eh bigla na lang tumumba. Ni-rush nila sa station hospital namin,” said Major Ronaldo Suscano of the 1st infantry Division.
Berin was initially brought to the station’s hospital where the doctors tried to revive. He was later brought to a bigger facility in Pagadian City where he was comatose for four days.
Berin died on January 14 due to “hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy,” a condition arising from a lack of oxygen to the brain. His family is now being assisted by the army.
