The officers of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) arrested the head transport group Piston George San Mateo on Tuesday.
The cops arrested San Mateo in front of the QC Hall of Justice where he was supposed to pay a bail worth P4,000. He was charged for alleged violation of the Public Service Act for leading a nationwide transport strike last February.
San Mateo, who was with Antonio Tino of ACT Teachers, and Ariel Casilao of Anakpawis, said he has the rights to post bail. However, the authorities still arrested him.
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary General Renato Reyes said the authorities tried to serve an arrest warrant at the Kilusang Mayo Uno office on Monday night but the Piston was not holding an office in the building anymore.
“George was not at the KMU office, and Piston is no longer holding office in the building. The police action was underataken late in the evening and was intended to intimidate protesting groups. We will vigorously protest these attacks and all efforts to stifle legitimate dissent,” said Reyes.
George led several rallies this year to oppose the jeepney modernization of the Duterte administration.
The Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) already released a memo serving as a warning to public franchise owners about stopping operation to protest.
