Armed men, who are believed members of the New People’s Army (NPA), attacked a municipal police station in Binuangan, Misamis Oriental on Sunday morning.
Four policemen identified as Officer-in-Charge Senior Insp. Dante Hallazgo, SPO1 Ramonito Sambas, PO1 Josua Satur and PO3 Alberto Bernadas were wounded in the fight that lasted for about two hours.
“After we rang our hourly bell at 3 o’clock in the morning, it was followed by gun fires coming from different directions outside the station,” said Hillazago.
The rebels immediately fled, reportedly by riding five vehicles.
PNP 10 Regional Director Chief Supt. Timoteo Pacleb said the attackers numbered around 60 to 100. He said what happened is a response of the NPA to the breakdown of the government on the peace talks to the National Democratic Front (NDF).
“The PNP strongly condemns the attack. It only shows that the NPA are not just rebels but also terrorists,” said Pacleb.
The PNP and the Army are now on full alert after the incident. The government troops are now taking extra precautions to the possibilities of ambush by the NPA, whose members are known to use landmines.
