Former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado was already out of the country and now in an undisclosed location in United States.
According to reports by ABS-CBN News, he left the country to Los Angeles at 10:30 p.m. on November 18, 2014 on board the Philippine Airlines Flight 102. He was along with his daughter, Karla Ciruela.
The Department of Justice (DoJ) and Bureau of Immigration (BI) declined to comment on this trip.
Justice secretary Leila De Lima said none can discuss the information of Mercado’s whereabouts as he is already under the Witness Protection Program (WPP). BI spokesperson Atty. Elaine Tan likewise noted that the agency must not speak with the issue.
Mercado is expected to return in the Philippines after 21 days.
Mercado is a former ally of Vice President Jejomar Binay. He turned the tables around by accusing him of benefiting from Makati projects including the alleged overpriced Makati Building II. He also showed several aerial shots of what is dubbed as “Hacienda Binay.”
The camp of Binay has since been denying the accusations.
Just recently, the Vice President announced that he will file charges against personalities who will accuse him of stealing money from the public funds. He also asked the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to also investigate Mercado.
