Newbie Senator Joseph Victor (JV) Ejercito on Tuesday filed a bill seeking for the modernization of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
The Senate Bill 842 calls for the government to acquire state-of-the-art weather and geophysical equipment to modernize the weather bureau of the Philippines.
“PAGASA should provide the most accurate and updated data to help the public prepared for natural disasters,” Ejercito said. “It is high time for the agency to be updated amid the fast-paced climate change.”
The bill requires the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) to allot some of it’s income to fund the act.
“Include a portion of the net income of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) to be taken from the 50 percent share of the national government for a period of six years from the effective of this act,” the bill said noting that the government should underestimate the role of PAGASA in “averting destruction brought by unforeseen natural disasters from floods to thunderstorms to typhoons to landslides, earthquakes and volcanic eruption.”
The bill also noted that modern equipment will benefit the whole nation as accurate measurements can give early warnings.
“We should find ways to make sure that PAGASA in not ‘under the weather’ when it comes to the application of technologies to improve the capabilities in providing timely and reliable weather forecasting and warning services for agriculture, transportation and other industries across the country.”
