President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday that he rejected the recommendation to lift the ban on open-pit mining.
Duterte said the recommendation of the Mining Industry Coordinating Council (MICC) to lift the ban on open-pit mines was rejected. He explained that the dangerous effects of such on the environment are obvious.
“You see, even if there is no study, you go to places where there’s an open-pit mining and you can see the destruction of the soil, the environment,” said Duterte. “Ayaw ko (I don’t want to) because it is destroying the soil, the environment and there are no immediate corrective measures.”
The open-pit mining was banned by Duterte appointee Gina Lopez. It was remained banned though she was rejected by the Commission on Appointments (CA).
If the ban was lifted, big-ticket ventures, such as the Tampakan copper and gold mine will open. However, Lopez earlier said the land can also be used for agriculture.
In September, Duterte said he agreed to ban open-pit mining because of its dangers to the environment. He said it’s also a challenge to the mining companies to look for alternative ways to extract minerals from the soil.
