Department of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre is in hot water after he was caught texting to “expedite” a case against opposition senator Risa Hontiveros.
On Monday, Hontiveros, in a privilege speech, called for the resignation of Aguirre and during the process, she presented a photo showing Aguirre asking a member of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) to speed up the case against her.
Hontiveros said Aguirre violated Republic Act 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
The photo was taken on September 5 during a Senate hearing on the case of Kian Delos Santos.
“The photographer was inadvertently able to capture the text message exchange on the screen of the phone of the DOJ secretary,” said Hontiveros.
Hontiveros said experts authenticated the photos but declined to identify the experts.
“Mr President, is the DOJ Secretary plotting a case against a sitting Senator while a Senate proceeding is going on, right inside the Senate session hall? Habang tayo ay naghi-hearing para makamit natin ang katarungan para sa isang 17-year-old na pinatay ng pulis na nakadapa sa lupa, mukhang ang pinagkakaabalahan ng ating justice secretary ay paano makaganti sa kanyang kalaban,” said Hontiveros.
Hontiveros said if Aguirre is indeed planning a case against her, she said she is willing to see him on the court.
