The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) urged all Filipinos in Iraq to voluntarily return to the Philippines.
The DFA announced on Saturday that “Filipinos in Iraq are enjoined to volunteer to return to the Philippines at government expense” due to the deteriorating security situation in the country caused by political clash.
When DFA raised the Crisis Alert into 3, this means that Filipinos in the area are urged to voluntarily turn themselves over to the Philippine embassy to be evacuated for free. In case of Iraq all places are the alert except for the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, which remains under the Crisis Alert Level 1.
“Kurdistan remains relatively calm and stable,” the DFA added.
The DFA is also sending a response team to the Iraq to help Filipinos in the voluntary repatriation while it “continues to monitor political and security development” in the country.
There are about 6,000 permanent, temporary and irregular Filipino workers in Iraq based on the 2012 Compendium of Statistics on International Migration of the Commission on Filipino Overseas.
