The Office of the Ombudsman, on Wednesday, filed criminal charges against former President Benigno Aquino III.
Conchita Carpio-Morales filed usurpation of authority under the Revised Penal Code and violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act against Aquino in relation to the bloody Mamasapano massacre in 2015, which shed the lives of 44 police officers.
The cases were filed at 9:43 a.m. Wednesday, before the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan.
On July 14, the Ombudsman cleared Aquino of the homicide charges. However, Carpio-Morales said he will still be liable for the death of his police officers. She said he made a wrong move in allowing former PNP Chief Alan Purisima to play a major role in the Mamasapano operation.
Purisma was suspended by the Ombudsman.
On July 19, Aquino appealed to the Ombudsman to dismiss the case against him. However, it was junked this September.
The Sandiganbayan is set to raffle the case of Aquino on Friday to determine which division will handle the case. If sufficient basis are found, it will issue an arrest warrant against Aquino.
P30,000 bail was set for graft and P10,000 for usurpation of authority.
Some of the family members of the 44 SAF members said they file a petition before the Supreme Court because they wanted Aquino to face reckless imprudence resulting to homicide because of his decisions.
