Big Companies Agreed To Get Garlic, Onion Straight From Farmers

More big companies agreed to go directly to farmers for their stocks of garlic and onions.
Department of Agriculture (DA) Manny Piñol said Jollibee Foods, Max’s Group, Shakey’s and Robinsons Supermarket pledged to go directly to farmers for their garlic and onion products.
Piñol earlier announced SM, Rustan’s, Mindanao-based NCCC Mall, ShopWise and SaveMore committed themselves to help the farmers by getting their stocks directly from them,
“With this development, I am seeing the start of the liberation of the country’s onion and garlic farmers from the control of cartels who have monopolized the industry for ages now,” said Piñol on Saturday.

Piñol also noted that farmers are suffering from the cheap garlic and onion provided by these cartels who will haggle some farmers so they can jack their prices down.
Officials of the previous administration are being investigated over their alleged involvement in the cartelized operation of the garlic industry.
