Banana With Edible Skin Developed In Japan

Banana is one of the most-eaten fruits in the world. In fact, countries with big economies like USA, UK, Japan, and much more make bananas as the most imported fruit.

We peel bananas and then throw them and enjoy the flesh. However, it’s not dangerous to eat the peel. It’s simply unappetizing.

Well, a revolution in the banana industry just happened… A company came up with the solution of a banana with an edible and delicious skin.

Created by the D&T Farm, these “Mongee Bananas” have thin skin like those of apples and therefor, good for eating.

D&T CEO Tetsuya Tanaka said the process of producing such fruits is called “freeze-thaw awakening,” which involves freezing the cells and then growing them inside a special greenhouse. The taste, according to Sora News 24, is “almost pineapple-like” flavor. However, the peel lacks flavor.

Tanaka said, the process also found success in growing tropical fruits like pineapple and papayas.

Though the bananas are being sold at $6 each, the demand catapulted. The company is now looking for ways to mass produce.
