Aquino Blames Arroyo for MRT Mishup

President Benigno Aquino III, once again, blamed the former administration in the series of MRT malfunction.
Aquino said the MRT problems would not be as big as today if the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would have dealt with it .
“There is a problem, but it’s a problem that should have less problems attach to it if certain things were done before we took over,” Aquino said in the sidelines of the Mindanao Inclusive Agribusiness Program launch in September 8, 2014.
He added that this problem has been there for some 30 years now.
Aquino also cited some documents pertaining to factors like maintenance etc. He also showed some difficulties of finding the right coaches for the best price noting that the company that wanted an extension of 25 to 30 years to their franchises also wanted an increase in rates.
He however acknowledged the “above normal glitch in their system,” but noted that the work is now ongoing and the government is getting new units to replace the old, and help accommodate the two million people who ride the train daily. Aquino said such units can accommodate 300,000 passengers a day.
Aquino declined to answer on how long the commuters will bear the glitches saying he still has to hold a meeting with the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) secretary Emilio Abaya, who earlier said that a P10 billion project is underway for the improvement of the MRT-3.
During the Senate hearing MRT-3 officials said some escalators and elevators are not functioning, the trains’ signalling systems were obsolete and none of the ticketing machines were working.
