Newly-appointed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero has been promoted to the rank of general.
On Wednesday, Guerrero was donned with the four-star rank by Department of National Defense (DND) secretary Delfin Lorenzana and AFP Vice Chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Salvador Melchor during the ceremony held at the Philippine Air Force Hall of Flags at the Villamor Air Base, Pasay.
Guerrero officially took over the chief-of-staff position replacing Eduardo Año who retired at 56. He is also set to retire this December. However, Lorenzana said he might endorse the extension of his term to President Rodrigo Duterte.
Guerrero is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1984. He is a recipient of multi awards such as the Distinguished Service Star for four times; Order of Lakandula (Degree of Commander); the Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree of Officer); and the Honorary Airborne Wings from the Royal Thai Army.
Last October Guerrero said he will focus on demolishing terrorist groups, neutralizing insurgency and support other agencies in defeating lawless people.
