Atty. Eric Niqui, the chief of NBI Environment Crimes Division, said the agency received an intelligence report as early as December 19, 2016, saying a group is selling the said giant clam pearls.
The suspects denied that they are the mastermind of the crime. They noted that they were just doing their jobs when they were arrested.
The NBI will turn over the confiscated giant pearls to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The said pearls are estimated to cost P10 million.
Giant clam pearls are endangered species.
